Three friends drove across the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona after
backcountry skiing in Colorado. They talked about their lives, and one said,

“I really shouldn’t be alive today.”

David Scalia’s astounding story occurred in 1982, but he had a scrapbook documenting everything he told his friends that day. It included photographs, names of doctors who cared for him, newspaper articles, and notes. A scuba equipment failure caused a devastating accident. He suffered incalculable damage to his body for more than 12 grueling hours. Days later, he was given a profound choice — to live or to die. Almost unbelievable, this is his true story.

The Choice A Story of Survival eBook Monte Anderson

Monte Anderson does a great job of making the reader feel a part of the experience relayed in this true story of survival. Dr. Anderson is an excellent writer and storyteller. The incident described in this story of survival is interesting in and of itself, but as we know, experience is for naught without good coming from it. Both the practical and the spiritual lessons learned are well laid out for us. I also appreciate learning a bit about hyperbaric medicine, so even the appendices were enjoyable to read as they arose within the story. I hope this will be the first of other stories to be shared by this caring and insightful author. I participate in two personal book groups, and I could see this book being great for book group discussions! I recommend the read to you, and hope you, too will read and recommend to others!

The Choice A Story of Survival eBook Monte Anderson Reviews

This is a remarkable story about a scuba diver undergoing an accidental rapid decompression, becoming comatosed for days and surviving with excellent medical care and the use of a hyperbaric chamber. The appendices explaining the details of man's encounter with high pressures of nitrogen also made for excellent reading.
David Scalia permits Dr. Anderson to share with us his near lethal encounter with DCS (decompression syndrome). He is undoubtedly, after reading this account, the most severely affected scuba diver to have survived this misfortune.
Dr. Anderson gives enough concise background history on David to provide us with the flavor of his adventuresome character. An EMT first provider himself, this true story gives us an appreciation and elation of how the dots in his life came together to allow his miraculous recovery. Kismet and divine intervention by a host of altruistic providers from Mexican fisherman to decompression experts revive David repeatedly from the depths.
If you are so inclined there is a definite sense of higher power and personal joie de vivre here.
It is a quick read, not excessively technical accompanied with replication of historical photos. Supplemental appendices and bibliographies are provided for the techies and those enthused to research further.
I just finished reading "The Choice A Story of Survival". What a wonderful story and what an excellent and personal narration of it by a first time writer! In the store, David, the scuba diver, is certainly an incredible individual and I appreciate that the author recognized his inner strength and wanted to capture it and share this strength with others. It is not only educational from a medical perspective but truly an inspiration to others who may have gone through or could go through such a life altering experience.
The subtle yet strong undercurrent of "Who" is all seeing and therefore the strength in any situation such as this shines through. The author also captures that this does not negate the importance of our own personal choice in life matters and the choices of others involved.

A great read and I look forward to reading more from this new author!
I could not put down this book. An extraordinary job, and on a first effort.

As an engineer, I enjoyed the technical storyline, but the primary page turning was driven by the human story of the amazing sequence of individuals getting involved at the right time.

It does show that progress is made when people (in this case the Doctors in San Diego) go outside the white lines when the reward is worth the risk- requires good judgement though not just randomly ignoring established precedent.

I hope it gets the recognition deserved.
Congratulations to Dr Anderson for bringing to the world of books this incredible story of survival against insurmountable odds.
The story takes place in a remote area of the Sea of Cortez in Mexico in 1982. David Scalia was there with friends on a scuba dive when he developed severe air embolism due to equipment failure when resurfacing.
Mr Scalia was quickly unresponsive. I am sure no person there would have given him a 1-2% chance of survival and these odds, if anything, would have been optimistic.
Just getting Mr Scalia to a decompression chamber required the help of many friends who were there at the time as well as friends at home who helped to limit the red tape involved to get him out of Mexico. (The closest decompression chamber was aboard the navy ship USS Dixon in San Diego) The fact that he eventually arrived in San Diego was an adventure of its own.
Superb cooperation between the doctors and staff of the Navy and those of the U of California San Diego school of medicine is another inspirational story detailed by Dr Anderson. Mr Scalia underwent multiple treatments in the decompression chamber, far more than was usual practice at that time.
Once Mr Scalia, against all odds, started showing signs of life we see another adventure of slow rehabilitation which only an incredibly resourceful individual like Mr Scalia could endure.
The book has a great deal of technical detail regarding the illness and treatment. Dr Anderson does a wonderful job of providing details in a manner that the non medical person can understand. This is a skill which is the result of spending many hours explaining complicated illnesses to patients and their families.
For those interested in more details of the illness, its physiology, treatment, history etc Dr Anderson provides excellent appendices.
In my opinion, this story would make a fantastic film. Wish I was a producer.
