This was a free book on . The story was fairly thin and the main character not all that appealing.
Didn't finish reading it.
It was a delight to find this story by one of my favorite childhood authors. It is quite different from other stories by Hodgson, but throughly enjoyable.
This is an old fashioned story about a high ranking Scottish chieftainess who was orphaned at birth and brought up in a huge castle on the moors. It is fascinating for what it reveals about the time and place and has nothing to do with white people as a race. Quite beautifully written by the famous author.
I am sure there are many who believe this just a fairytale. I thought so too as I began to read it. But in truth, I believe she is speaking of things she knew, perhaps experienced. It fits in perfectly with my beliefs of the afterlife. So whether real or imagined, it speaks truth to me. There is no fear in death, the people we love do not cease to exist, they are with us, near us, doing a work God has for them to do. And best of all they are happy and want us to be happy too.
I loved this book. Very spiritual story about a young Scottish heiress who exhibits an ability to see people who have died. She calls these people the white people. Extremely well-written by Burnett, and typical of the quality of her books. Very short and can be read quickly but I found myself savoring each scene.
A mystical little story.
Young Scot, Ysobel, is the heiress of lonely, feudal Castle Muircarrie. Ysobel, unknowingly, is blessed (?) with the ability to see dead people. All of her life she has seen and interacted with fair, transparent, silent beings, that she calls "The White People". Due to her isolation and loneliness, she has been glad of these experiences.
In London, she meets the MacNairns, mother and son, who are deeply interested in "The White People". Eventually, Mrs MacNairn reveals that Hector MacNairn is terminally ill. His damaged heart may cease to beat at any time. Ysobel is dismayed as she has come to love the MacNairns.
His Mother desires reassurance that they will be together always, if not in the corporeal, at least spiritually. Ysobel supplies that reassurance with her revealation of The Dream, that is not a dream, which will cast out The Fear and reveal the wonders of The Awakening.
The author uses this slight romance to express her beliefs concerning mortality and an afterlife. The noble characters are employed as simple frames on which to drape this theory. The White People, the Secret that the world has not learned, the wonders of the Law, The Dream that casts out The Fear, these are all expressions that the author uses to define an existence that continues after physical death.
The story's interest will depend on the readers acceptance or tolerance of Mrs Burnett's beliefs.
I was blown away by this book! The writing style was elegant and beautiful. The story itself was amazing. It's told with the backdrop of a mist filled Scottish moor. The book begins with "Perhaps the things which happened could only have happened to me. I do not know. I never heard of things like them happening to any one else. But I am not sorry they did happen." If you death is mysterous and sad to you, read this book. Although the story could have been sad - it wasn't in the least -- because of the underlying peacefulness of the belief and visions of the main character. I don't want to say too much -- that would give the story away. The sense of love, beauty and peace is something that you will take away after reading this little book. It is indeed a gem - and a short book. You can read it in one setting.
